Adolescent
This is the time when braces are generally worn. Orthodontics will align crowded teeth and camouflage mild to moderate skeletal discrepancies of the jaws. If the patient has received earlier treatment to develop and align the jaws, now is the time to detail the bite and finish individual tooth alignment. Generally if all the preceding work has been correctly maintained, only a short 12-18 months of treatment may be necessary with braces. Use of a fully preadjusted edgewise 'straightwire' type appliance provides the very best in high quality alignment and orthodontic correction of occlusal problems.
If earlier orthopaedic procedures have not been undertaken, then expansion, lower jaw development (decompensation) or Twin Block Plates may be necessary before the braces are commenced. Even during adolescence 'growth modification' and orthopaedic principles can be employed. If insufficient future growth is anticipated, other strategies must be employed to find the necessary space to align the teeth and correct the bite. As in any reasonable treatment plan, extractions may be necessary, however that consideration is always made in light of your ultimate facial development.
Full fixed orthodontic appliances (braces) generally require 24 months of active therapy if no previous treatment has been received.
Traditionally braces are made of stainless steel and are still the most commonly used appliance today. Recent demands for less noticeable braces have led to the development of clear and ceramic 'tooth coloured' appliances which provide the same high quality of treatment.
Braces treatment is usually divided into distinct stages which are outlined under the orthodontics section of this site.
